Meeting with Marie-Laure / Uzès Sequence

Rencontre avec Marie-Laure / Séquence Uzès

When life invites you to step out of your comfort zone, certain decisions can transform your daily life. This is how Séquence was born, a poetic and graphic boutique in Uzès. A showcase for local and eco-responsible creations.

How did the idea for your store come about and what was your journey to make it a reality?

I worked for 27 years for a large cement group, including the last fifteen years as responsible for purchasing equipment required for the group's control laboratory.
The departure of our two eldest children for abroad, despite the fact that they were both already well established professionally, made me realize that I myself had settled into a certain comfort zone over the years and that it was perhaps time to spice up my professional life a little.

Passionate about crafts, but to my great regret absolutely not manual, I decided to highlight crafts. After working in partnership with the CCI of Nîmes for the assembly of my Business Plan, I opened in June 2023 the Séquence boutique in Uzès in which I offer local artisanal products, but also French creations made in compliance with an eco-responsible approach, in the fields of decoration, urban and sports fashion, women's and baby accessories, well-being...

How would you describe the style and aesthetic of your store, what are your main sources of inspiration?

I wanted Sequence to be both poetic and graphic in its proposals, and I work mainly on impulse. My range comes from a careful selection.

If your store had a musical theme, what would be the ideal soundtrack?

EVERYTHING MATTERS performed by Pomme and Aurora.

If you could invite any artist or designer, living or dead, to a creative workshop in your shop, who would you choose and what would you create together?

Perhaps Gustav Klimt to create a painting in the style of his work "The Apple Tree"

Can you tell us about a particular project or collection that you are particularly proud of, and why?

The project I am most proud of today is having carried mine through to the end. Opening my shop, and seeing that my commercial proposition is appealing.

What challenges have you faced as a creator and owner of a stationery store, and how did you overcome them? What advice can you give to those who want to start their own business?

The challenges are almost daily :) The most difficult are the choice of products, you often have to dare to take risks! Having opened recently, the biggest challenge remains cash flow management, ensuring fixed costs and there are many. Finding alternatives to keep the store alive all year round and not just in the summer.

If I had one piece of advice to give to someone who would like to get started, it would be to have identified their target, to surround themselves with competent people on a professional level but also to have the support of their family. Afterwards, motivation and self-confidence will do the rest naturally but you have to be patient, very patient.
